HEAD COACH GIL JACKSON

Gil Jackson just completed his first season as head men's basketball coach at Howard University and if the last half of the season is any indication, then Bison fans have a lot to be excited about in the future.

It took two thirds of the season to implement his philosophy of discipline and patience into the team, but it began to pay dividends when Howard became one of the most dangerous teams, winning five of its last seven games down the stretch, including a first round win over North Carolina A&T in the MEAC Tournament.

Jackson came to the Hilltop after paying his dues for 16 years at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the premier academic institutions. During his tenure there, the Quakers won nine Ivy League championships and earned nine NCAA berths to the NCAA tournament.

Jackson's coaching career started at Sanford School in Hockessin, DE where he was twice named coach of the year in the state. He then moved on to Penn for a 16-year tenure with former head coach Fran Dunphy as his assistant coach at one of the most successful programs during that period.

Jackson has Bison fans excited about the future, having already signed five players who make up what is being called the top recruiting class in the conference. That, along with the return of several key returning players, has the Howard program in position to become one of the tops in the MEAC.

Jackson is a 1969 graduate of Elizabethtown College.
